π² WILD BEHAVIOR
Helysarcs live on wide-open deserts, there they spend most of their life running.
Most of the time they are very active after the sunset and before sunrise, when it´s the best time for feeding, catching insects. They use their fluorescent ornaments on skull to lure the insects close. Every helysarc has different skull pattern, even the chicks from same hatch. During hot day they spend their time looking for herbs and cacti, cacti juice is their favorite food. In a time of emergency, they can kills and suck blood from small animals.
Young males (roosters) are very curious, sociable and live in a groups. That´s why it´s easier to catch them and tame them.
It´s typical for youngster group to have in possession one oasis and live around it. I´ts very common that one oasis belongs to more groups.
When the mating season comes, most of the hens gather around this oasis to found their partner.
Roosters have very difficult mating rituals. They make a circle by piling sand into the wall, put some blooming cacti and rocks in the middle and dance around by „drawing pictures“ in the sand when the female approach. If the female likes it, she eats the cacti and they mate. After this ritual the male needs to „clean the canvas“ for another dance.
Roosters can start to reproduce at age of 8 while hens at age of 10.
Hens lay usually 2 or 3 eggs, in a pile of sand, which is keeping the eggs warm while they are on hunt. It´s very hard to find the eggs because of their rocky appearance.
On the other hand, hens are very territorial. They live all their life alone except the mating seasons and taking care of their chicks, till they are 3 years old. Chicks learn everything by watching their mother. The mortality of chicks is very low because hens are aggressive during this time

π‘ DOMESTIC BEHAVIOR
Once tamed helysarc will never leave your side. We can call this something
like an 'imprinting' and because of this imprinting, they don´t reproduce in
captivity, that´s why they can be only captured from the wild. If the wild
helysarc is not tamed but still in captivity, he will start plucking out his
feathers, stops eating and starves to death.
π STABLE REQUIREMENTS
Wide, open spaces with lots of dirt and sand. They don´t need to be
sheltered unless they are in cold and wet climate, which is not very much
recommended. The colder they get, the more they run or exercise, the more
they need to eat and become more stressful.
Tamed helysarcs can roam free, but they never get far away from their tamer.
They are very curious and need stimulation so it´s good if you put in your paddock old logs or trunks which are good hiding places for many types of insects. Another toys can be piles of rocks, but also balls, so they can play and explore. Make them find their food by hiding it.
Roosters need socialization more often than hens.
